While, for many, the Six Nations will need no introduction, it’s fair to say that it occupies one of the most pivotal points in the sporting calendar. A fiercely fought tournament between some of the founding fathers of rugby union, the Guinness Six Nations Championship has carved a reputation that places it among the hallowed halls of great sporting events.
Contested across seven weeks, the Six Nations has been an annual fixture since as far back as 1883, but always with a thread of commonality – competitive spirit, designed to unify those six countries for almost two months of professional, highly-contested sport. It’s also an ideal opportunity to provide an injection of tourism and camaraderie to the participating nations.
That doesn’t even touch on the viewing figures, which, for the 2025 contest, peaked at 4.57 million with the clash of the Channel between England and France. There are no signs of slowing, either, with preparations for the 2026 tournament well underway.
As such a major fixture in the sporting calendar, interest in the Six Nations was naturally incredibly high. And while that’s always going to bring those legitimate fans with it, it can also attract all the wrong kinds of attention. Six Nations events in the past have been marred by violence, antisocial behaviour and criminal damage.
That naturally presents a stumbling block for events like those that Virgin Media ran throughout the Six Nations. With expensive equipment and a prestigious venue in the home of English rugby, there were understandable concerns around the integrity of the event, as well as the infrastructure that goes into creating an atmosphere that befits the Six Nations.
Chief among these was the risk of theft. Screens and speakers are naturally massive targets, but there’s also the smaller, no-less-important aspects of that, like cabling, connectors, and safety features like ramps and cable covers. Plus, the monetary aspect of theft is just one consideration – disruption can lead to unhappy crowds and further complications.
With Virgin Media reaching out to us ahead of the tournament’s official start date in late January of 2025, we set to work immediately designing a solution that not only offered the protection that their equipment needed but also the professionalism and passion that a tournament like the Six Nations warrants.
We were quick to adapt, offering comprehensive overnight security delivered by experienced, SIA-licensed operatives. Late evening into early morning are perhaps the most at-risk timeframes – particularly for some of the issues we’d already identified – and we sought to mitigate those with a constant protective presence.
We also identified the option for ad-hoc support. Events like the Six Nations can often bring an overwhelming amount of visitors, and by providing the option for additional support should it ever be necessary, we could offer extra reassurance that, even if the worst happens, ProFM are on hand to help.
While England narrowly missed out on the top spot in 2025’s Six Nations to France, ProFM were thrilled to be able to provide champion security across the full 8 weeks of the tournament, and across several different locations across the UK.
Minimal disruptions meant that the Twickenham experience was able to run smoothly and effectively, and our expert officers ensured that none of the threats that might have impacted a successful event could materialise. All of that ensured we were able to deliver a service that Virgin Media were satisfied with, and that we were proud to put the ProFM name to.
